My name is Megan Baker and there are three things I really love:
3) Social Media
In terms of my professional/educational history…
I studied Communications/Journalism and Political Science at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY where I was a member (and eventual Executive Editor and award winning columnist) of the Cardinal Courier, Fisher’s student run newspaper.
Right after college I served with an AmeriCorps program called City Year. City Year is an education focused national non-profit organization that hires 17-24 year olds to commit to a year of full-time community service in schools.
I served in San Jose, CA. My first year I served at a middle school, where I re-opened the school library, tutored children with autism in literacy, ran an after school program with a team, supported a variety of physical service projects, and helped develop the site’s social media. During my second year I focused on recruitment and civic engagement in the community and continued to work on social media, both locally and nationally.
After my two years of service, I moved to Boston, MA where I took a job as the Social Media Manager at City Year’s national headquarters. During this time I got to work on the award winning #makebetterhappen campaign, develop the organizational social media policy, and work on teams running national events.
While working for City Year I also attended graduate school at Emerson College where I studied Communication Management with a focus in Stakeholder (Public) Relations. I did my capstone project on social media and its impacts on political activism in the Arab Spring.
And now where the beer comes in…
I have been a big fan of craft beer for the past 5 or so years. After I finished my Master’s Degree I left my role at City Year and became the Social Media Specialist at the Boston Beer Company where I implement social media strategies for Samuel Adams and Allied Brands.
So this is my blog. It’s where I will bitch about politics, talk about new beers I’m into, and write when the fancy strikes. I hope you enjoy the journey.
